Vacancy description

Location: Murton, County Durham

Job type: Hybrid

Salary: Real Living Wage – £26,208 per annum

As part of a consortium with GE Vernova, Metlen Energy & Metals is helping to deliver Eastern Green Link 1 (EGL1).

EGL1 is a new high voltage direct current (HVDC) cable link being jointly developed by SP Energy Networks and National Grid Electricity Transmission.

It will be built between the Torness area of East Lothian, and Hawthorn Pit (between Murton and South Hetton) in County Durham. Converter stations and new substations are required onshore at each end. The convertor station works will be delivered by our consortium.

The main construction works are getting underway, with the project expected to be operational in 2029.

We’re committed to supporting and contributing to the local communities within which we will be working. We’re looking for an Apprentice Community Liaison Officer who can help us deliver on our social value commitments in County Durham.

It’s a hybrid role, reporting to our Community Liaison Manager, and the successful candidate will undertake a Level 4 Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability Apprenticeship.

Responsibilities include:

  • Research local communities’ needs and develop/deliver social value activities in response.
  • Represent Metlen Energy & Metals at school/college events and volunteering initiatives in the local community.
  • Build and manage relationships with relevant partner organisations, such as local schools, charities, community organisations, and employment and skills agencies.
  • Work with internal colleagues and supply chain partners to gain their support for social value initiatives.
  • Collect, analyse and report on social value data to ensure commitments remain on target.
  • Produce case studies about the success of our social value activities, and work with the Community Liaison Manager to generate content for internal and external publications.
  • Deputise for the Community Liaison Officer for Torness during their absence (this is not expected to require travel to site).

What we’re looking for

Someone with a minimum of Functional Skills Level 2 in Maths and English, or GCSEs grades 9-4 (A*- C) in Maths and English.

You’ll have the confidence to engage with a variety of stakeholders, and excellent communication skills, both verbal and written. Because of the need to travel within the local area, you’ll need a driving licence and your own transport.

There will be some administrative tasks associated with the role, so you’ll need good IT literacy and an eye for detail too.

Finally, you’ll be highly self-motivated and someone who is passionate about making a positive difference to local communities.

The closing date is 23rd May 2025, please submit CV to michele.atkinson@durham.gov.uk.
