How DurhamWorks Helps Employers Find the Right Talent

Declan Claughan · February 4, 2025 ·

How DurhamWorks Helps Employers Find the Right Talent.pdf

The Auckland Project is a charity on regeneration, tourism, and creating opportunities for young people. As part of their mission, they aim to support young people in developing skills and securing employment.

Richard Hinch, Head of Learning and Skills at The Auckland Project, has worked with DurhamWorks to recruit and support young employees. Through this partnership, the charity has successfully hired two people from DurhamWorks, including one candidate who originally joined through The Prince’s Trust. This individual required additional job coaching and support during their work placement, which DurhamWorks provided.

By offering tailored guidance and a structured transition, DurhamWorks made the hiring process easier for the Auckland Project. The organisation not only gained valuable employees but also had the confidence that the new hires were receiving the support they needed to succeed in their roles.

The partnership goes both ways – when The Auckland project encounters young people who could benefit from additional support, they refer them to DurhamWorks. This ensures that more young people can access the training and opportunities needed to enter the workforce.

Nathan’s Work Trial Leads to a Permanent Job

Kevin Wright · January 20, 2025 ·

With current staff shortages and tougher financial times these are challenging times for any business. In light of this DurhamWorks offer potential employers assistance in accessing a grant to help towards the cost of employing a young person.

One organisation who took advantage of the grant is Speedo Car Parts in Crook, who are suppliers of car parts and accessories. They used the grant to offer Nathan Thompson a role with their organisation which turned into a permanent position.

In his role at Speedo Car Parts Nathan engages in dealing with customers both over the phone and in person, helping with incoming and outgoing deliveries and assisting with other general duties around the shop.

Nathan feels incredibly positive about working at Speedo Car Parts: “The best part is the atmosphere as I made to feel welcome and supported by other members of staff. Also having a manager who cares about their staff and does not consider them to be just another number.”

As well as giving Nathan an opportunity for paid work at Speedo Car Parts has developed Nathan in other ways “Working at speedo has improved my overall confidence” he added.

This is reflected in the words of Lorraine Reid, who manages Nathan. “There has been a lot of changes for Nathan. He is more confident, and this has improved a lot. as he was initially quite shy and nervous and was reluctant to ask questions or ask for help. His skills and knowledge have also increased. He is able to work more independently, still asks questions when needed but willing to try to use his own initiative first.”

Lorraine is extremely positive about the support they received through DurhamWorks. “Nathan had interviewed for a job we had available but someone else had been successful instead. However, we spoke to Michele Atkinson, DurhamWorks Employer Engagement Officer, and discussed this and possible options going forward.”

“Michele mentioned DurhamWorks funding that we could possibly access, and this would offer him the opportunity to show us what he was capable off whilst analysing if having an extra employee is viable for the business and we wanted to give him a chance. Both Nathan and ourselves went into it knowing that if it proved successful then there was the opportunity for long term employment for him with us.”

Lorraine also highlighted the opportunities that DurhamWorks can offer to young people who are not currently in employment and suggested that it is something other businesses should definitely consider. “If they are serious about offering the young person employment at the end of it if the trial is successful then it is worth giving the DurhamWorks programme a go. If the young person is willing to put the work in and try, then you have the opportunity to give someone regular employment that may otherwise not get it.”

Nathan is also positive about his DurhamWorks experience and would recommend them to other people in the same situation as him, “I would definitely recommend Durham works as they are always supportive and good to work with.”

From Lost to Confident: Kayleigh’s Journey to Becoming a Nail Technician.pdf

Kayleigh, a 21-year-old aspiring beauty professional, always had a passion for nail art. Her journey began when she discovered her love for beauty while doing her family’s nails for her sister’s wedding. However, the COVID-19 pandemic derailed her plans, leaving her feeling stuck and unmotivated about pursuing her dreams.

Encouraged by her parents, Kayleigh joined DurhamWorks, where she attended her first session with a dedicated coach. Initially nervous and anxious about meeting new people, she quickly felt supported and listened to by the friendly staff. Through social activities and one-on-one sessions, Kayleigh gradually built her confidence, which helped her step outside her comfort zone.

Stephen’s Journey to a Permanent Role

Declan Claughan · September 17, 2024 ·

Durham County Council’s Sessional Employment Programme offers paid work experience opportunities tailored to Care Experienced Young People. By aligning placements with individual talents and career aspirations, the program aims to foster meaningful career development.

In February 2024, Stephen, a young person in care, sought a Sessional Employment placement that would complement his Personal Trainer studies.

A suitable opportunity was identified at Freemans Quay Leisure Centre, thanks to assistance from Volunteer Culture and Sport. Stephen began his placement in April, working one day a week.

Stephen excelled in his role and was well-received by the team. Encouraged to enhance his qualifications, he pursued and completed a lifeguard course with funding support facilitated through the Area Action Partnership (AAP).

Upon completion, Stephen was informed of job openings at Freemans Quay by manager Peter Symm, who expressed interest in his continued employment.

With support, Stephen applied for Leisure Attendant roles at Durham and another local authority. He secured interviews and received job offers from both. Ultimately, he accepted the role with Durham and will be working at Freemans Quay, rejoining the team where he previously completed his placement.

Stephen’s successful transition from a Sessional Employment placement to a permanent position at Freemans Quay highlights the effectiveness of Durham’s employment programme in facilitating career growth and stability for Care Experienced Young People.
