Job Description (Provided by Artichoke)
The traineeship roles have been created to support young people (aged 18-30) who are interested in learning more about facilitation and community engagement. Trainees play a crucial role in supporting our Learning & Participation programme and work closely with experienced facilitators to achieve the outcomes of each workshop. You’ll learn to guide group discussions, workshops, and other collaborative processes effectively. You’ll develop skills in group dynamics and communication and have the opportunity to practice facilitation under supervision. This is not a full-time role. Workshops will be held intermittently between May and November across County Durham, with some periods featuring multiple sessions in quick succession and others having extended gaps. Due to the number of workshops we will be running, it’s not our expectation that you are available for all of these and we’ll work with the candidates and their availability. This is a moderately physically demanding role that involves hands-on assistance with participants during sessions, standing for extended periods, and supporting the lead facilitator with transporting materials and finished works to and from storage. However, we are committed to accommodating trainees’ access needs and encourage you to get in touch with us before applying if you have any concerns about the physical aspects of the role (see ‘How to Apply’ for our contact details). Please be aware that, as this is a freelance role, you will need to register as self-employed with HMRC prior to starting work. You will also be responsible for handling your own income tax and National Insurance contributions.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in designing and planning workshops, including setting objectives, and selecting appropriate activities or exercises.
- Support the artist and lead facilitator in a workshop environment, helping manage the session outcomes and collaborating with the participants.
- Participate in debriefing sessions to evaluate the effectiveness of the workshop

- Are aged 18-30
- Are currently based in County Durham
- Have an interest in facilitation and community engagement
- Have a mature attitude and excellent communication skills
- Are hardworking, personable and can maintain a positive and realistic outlook
under pressure - Are comfortable working in an environment with various ages and abilities
