Michael goes full circle, helping other young people into work

Michael was unemployed and unsure what to do next. Now, after some support and guidance from DurhamWorks, he’s working as a tutor, helping other young people to improve their maths and English skills and become work ready.

After a stint working in the South East in IT support, Michael moved back to the North East and found himself unemployed. Michael had a degree in Mathematics but was unsure what he wanted to do next in his career. He signed up to Optimum Skills’ DurhamWorks course, and during the training showed an interest in working in education.

Optimum Skills offered Michael work experience in their office and he developed some excellent new maths teaching resources for them to use with their learners. Optimum Skills were so impressed that they decided to give Michael a job and train him to become a qualified tutor.

With support from Optimum’s qualified and experienced tutors, Michael completed a Level 3 Certificate in Education and Training. He’s now using his qualification and experience to offer maths and English training, and Work Ready Skills courses, to other DurhamWorks learners.

Michael said: “It is really good to work for a training provider where I can support participants into work; I truly have come full circle. I know how frustrating it can be to be out of work, but with the right support and guidance, it helps to see the wood through the trees and find a job that’s really satisfying. I love seeing participants progress into work.”

The next step of Michael’s journey will be to become a fully qualified assessor, enabling him to deliver apprenticeship training in specialist industries.
