17-year-old Eboni’s lack of qualifications was holding her back from finding a job. Completing DurhamWorks training gave her the opportunity to prove herself and now she’s excelling in her Customer Services Apprenticeship.
Eboni was home tutored instead of attending school, so didn’t receive any formal qualifications, which was preventing her from getting into work or training. Eboni contacted DurhamWorks and started training on Optimum Skills’ ‘Work Ready’ course, which aims to prepare young people for the world of work.
She showed so much promise on the course that Eboni was encouraged to apply for a vacancy for a Level 2 Customer Services Apprenticeship with Optimum Skills. She got the job and is now going from strength to strength, building her skills and growing in confidence.
To start with, Eboni was anxious about answering the phone, but this is now one of her favourite tasks. Eboni told us “My favourite things at work are making files and organising them, I now love answering the phone, which I used to be scared of.”
Optimum Skills tutor and assessor, Katrina said, “Eboni is doing fantastically, she is very hard working, gets course work completed in a really timely manner and is very friendly. I’ve really seen her confidence grow, which is great to see.”
Eboni and her fellow apprentices are enjoying earning whilst learning, getting practical skills from the workplace and studying subjects such as health and wellbeing, cyber bullying and mental health. Eboni has also discovered a real enthusiasm for working on the student newsletter, which Optimum Skill send out to all of their apprentices.
