Building skills for the future

Eight young people have celebrated successfully completing a construction-based skills programme with DurhamWorks and Esh Group.

The learners displayed their newfound confidence and presentation skills to share their experiences of Esh Connexts at an event at Esh Academy, Bowburn on Thursday 7 September.

The seven-week Esh Connexts programme is aimed at young people with an interest in construction and has been designed to build the knowledge and skills they need to work in the industry.

Connor, Ryan, Kieran, Marcus, Matthew, Sam, Paul and Steven are the latest group of young people to complete the programme, which has taught them vital skills such as first aid, financial management and team building, as well as practical construction skills. Work experience placements and off-site visits also allowed them to learn practically, alongside industry professionals.

The group also received their CSCS cards, the vital certificates needed to work on any construction site, and they’re now looking forward to using their new skills to find work. Just days after completing his course, Ryan has already been offered a role as a Labourer with the Esh Group.

Connor: “With the skills I’ve learnt from this, I can go out and have an easier time finding a job now”.

Sam: “I’ve enjoyed the course so much, I don’t want to leave.”

Matt: “It’s definitely an experience that’s benefitted me. I’d recommend other people to go on it.”

Paul: “It’s been a very good course – it’s given me the insight I need to work my way up in construction.”
