Black Truffle

When a member of her staff moved on, Karen needed a new recruit to help in her fashion boutique and cafe. DurhamWorks helped her to find and fund a replacement.

Black Truffle boutique and coffee shop opened in Seaham seven and a half years ago. Owner Karen had employed apprentices before so when she found out about DurhamWorks she was keen to get involved.

DurhamWorks, which helps to get unemployed 16-24 year olds from County Durham into employment and education, were able to offer Karen funding to take on a new apprentice and helped her to find suitable candidates for interview who were genuinely interested in the position.

Karen said: “DurhamWorks did a lot of the organising and took away that headache of hiring someone new. Running a busy business doesn’t leave time for lots of extra paperwork, so it was great to be able to just pass information to my Business Advisor, Emma. She found young people for me to interview and when we appointed Brittany, Emma helped to filled in all the forms for the grant we used to fund her salary, all I had to do was check and sign them.

Using DurhamWorks has been a really efficient and effective way of recruiting new staff and Karen would encourage other employers to do the same.”
