Everyone has a Story to Tell - why not tell yours BETTER through film? Film-Making, Animation & Spoken Word This 6-week long artist-led course is ideal for anyone passionate about film, animation, or spoken word, and who wants to develop their own uniquely creative online content. Perfect for anyone interested in creating more imaginative Youtube, TikTok and Instagram posts, or to get their voice heard. Attendees who complete the course will also have the chance to gain an Arts Award (from the prestigious Arts Council England award programme).

Course Content:

Working with film animator Sheryl Jenkins you’ll explore different animation techniques – including drawing, modelling, cut-outs and digital animations.  Whatever your art interest – Manga, Anime or Graphic Novels – Sheryl will work with you to help you develop your own unique style experimenting with drawings, cut-outs, plasticine models and digital animation techniques.  You’ll also gain technical skills by working with film-making software - iMovie, Stop Motion Studio and Garage Band. Working alongside Sheryl, award-winning Spoken Word artist Bob Beagrie will help develop your ideas into soundtracks, using skills and techniques borrowed from spoken word, poetry and rap. By bringing together both sets of new skills (digital animation and spoken word/text), you’ll create your own fabulous animated movies or film-poems that you can upload and share across social media. And - as well as creating your own films – you can submit your work for a Bronze Arts Award qualification (an Arts Council England portfolio-based qualification).

Throughout the course, you’ll be involved in every single part of the film-making process, from originating initial ideas to storyboarding, filming, post-production and online sharing. And at the end of the course, you can share your work across your preferred social media channels and if you’re happy for us to share it – we’ll broadcast it too.

If you can imagine it, we will help you turn it into an animated film.

Who can take part?

To qualify you must be based in County Durham, aged 16-24, and not currently registered in education, employment or training.  No previous experience of film-making, spoken word or animation required.  Nor do you need to be a whizz at technology – the course is aimed at animators at beginner level.  All you need is an interest in film, storytelling or digital media, a desire to develop new skills, and a passion for creativity. In return, you’ll have the opportunity to work directly with two amazing artists, take part in an exciting range of storytelling and animation workshops, and develop your own innovative and imaginative online content.

What do I need?

Ideally, you should have access to your own iPad or tablet – if you don’t have one, please speak to your DurhamWorks adviser – they may be able to help. Alternatively, if you let us know that this is an issue, we have spare iPads that we can bring to the sessions.

When will the course run?

Face-to-face workshops will run every Wednesday and Thursday afternoon starting on Wednesday 15th September at The Venue in Stanley (tbc).  The course will run for 6 weeks in total.
