Construction Multiskills (C&G 6219)
Location: Belmont Industrial Estate
Qualification: City & Guilds 6219 L1 Award in Construction

This is a seven-week programme that incorporates basic joinery & bricklaying skills alongside H&S, CV building and employability. The outcome is a City & Guilds 6219 L1 Award in Construction Skills (Multiskills) Funding has been sourced to also ensure the learners gain their CSCS card should they want to.

Week one incorporates the induction, and the introduction to the practical skills needed for the course.

Week one to three will start in the brick workshop where learners will be taught the basics on the tools and materials, and then get their hands dirty. In their own cordoned off covid secure 4m2 area, the learners will build small brick pyramids, add corners, use the chalk lines to build straight half walls with brick. If they have a natural ability we add the block brick wall to challenge and stretch. They take their final assessment in week 3.

Each day there is some maths or English work with H&S undertaken with our specialist FS tutor – usually 40 mins per person per day on a 1:1 or 2:1 basis depending on numbers. A mentor is also available for additional 1:1 support and encouragement.

One week is a dedicated H&S & careers week, where they identify their goals and interests, they will research construction job roles and think about what area of construction interests them the most. They also develop their own CV identifying their strengths and achievements to be able to approach employers (especially for apprenticeship interviews). We can arrange interviews at this stage with our IAG specialists and traineeship partner to consider the progression routes.

Time will also be spent doing e-learning on construction related subjects such as manual handling, asbestos and intro to health & safety, fire safety, slips & trips, etc and will complete the health & safety unit for the qualification.

Remaining weeks (to week 7) is spent on joinery and an introduction to the tools, then start on basic joinery joints. Their final assessment week is either week 6 or 7 (depending on when their H&S week is held).

Funding will be applied for those that want to go on and complete their CSCS card.
